ITBS is a very common injury in runners and cyclists. The Iliotibial band runs from the hip to below the knee and pain from ITBS can present itself anywhere along the band, although typical locations are at the lateral side of the knee & at the widest part of the hip.  This condition can be worsened by mechanical instability, excessive pronation, poor running technique & inappropriate footwear. Treatment may be as simple as stretching, a change in footwear or orthotics.
